ICONoCLASTICS

ICONoCLASTICS
LYRICS PROMPT

  Iconic Classics for discerning listeners.
                ICONoCLASTICS or iconOclastics.
This is a band concept that works with the fluid nature of 2017, and has its roots in the folk music   brought over during the European invasion of America. ICONoCLASTICS SPECIALIZES IN Americana. Go to my YouTube playlist called American Dankbilly.
We love the solos in bluegrass. More solo verses than sung verses and usually dancin'.  I'm goint to be looking for soloists once I get a nice chunk of songs memorized and find a good bass player.
People like that. People are surprised when I tell them Hillbilly Music is derived from the folk music of Scotland and Ireland. It came from the Germans who settled many towns. The people of the bogs became the people of the mountains in the Appalachian chain.
The idea is to make a set list of songs I like, and be able to carry the melody and chord structure. Something to take with me wherever I go. People that sing better can jump in and sing that song instead of me. Some songs like Rockabilly Hall of Fame(Key of F) needs random harmonica fills throughout the song. So I utilize whoever is available. Somebody knows all the words to Tabacco Road? Great, because this way, IconOclastics Is a band that is organized yet unpredictable. People can just get up and solo (one more time!)
I will note songs that have harmonica in it and so a harp player would look and note songs to play on and which harmonica to use. I'm promoting the IconOclastics formula of taking great songs from the past and making them current and the formula states that at least one person has to know the entire structure of the entire song. If I find a bass player, IconOclastics do the songs the bass player knows complete.
My concept, my monkeys, my zoo. I create a beat or a new dynamic to add to the song in an original way, and I have to stick to it. Come to find out, this is how to beat BMI  and their fees for playing music. Get what the rhythm is doing before you do a song like they might in American Idol or something.
My hands got about 3 to 5 years for playing guitar left and I want to really run with this concept. But it's a concept for the people. Anyone can have a set of songs and any arrangement of musicians and spontaneity and music are going to be important in this new electronic world we are entering. It can be metal like, and loud, and it can be with non amplified groups.

To hear live music today by cover bands is self induced torture. I don't want to be hemmed in by someone who says they "don't know that chord" or " NOBODY REMEMBERS THIS SONG" type of discouragement and invalidation. Guitar players gotta know their jazz chords and I have an opinion about capos I will keep to myself.

Everyone in bands these days has "personality" and introverts have no quiet heroes. I want to create, not perform but alas, after 30 years of hobby guitar I want to create an alternative to the same old shit. A performance vehicle for introverts, a community of artists. Songs are our vocal heritage.

Nobody knows this song or that song? Play stuff that people know I am told. You say! I listen to Prarie Home Companion and every song is new to me but some I like a lot on the first listen, and what I like is the variety of instruments. Fiddle Bango Harp or whatever. This is what I'm talking about. The reason I put it on my blog is so i have a lyric prompt wherever I go. It's a community thing too, connecting in a simple way withpeople and creating a better grade of performance because of the eschewing  (to spit out in disgust) of overplayed pop music, a rich new field to plow. John Barleycorn must die.
We got the internet now. If the Eagles have been your favorite band for the last 30 years you haven't been paying attention. There is SO MUCH to listen to. Urging people to turn off the TV, read books again, write poetry and find new music to listen to.
New 95.9 is back to its hard rock roots after a stint as a talk radio site but it is still the same 30 songs over and over, when the catalog for these 30 bands included 1000 songs. Where's the rest of them? Let's bring back songs  that have stood the test of time. Songs that need an update and are simply unrecognized classics that need a bigger beat.
I'll explain more as we go. Note the endless solos in these songs  to start. Fiddle banjo harp bongos and whatever instrument people have on them and not harp harp but you know harmonica harp. But most of all we are a hillbilly band and this is probably considered Rockabilly. Rockabilly is where I have found a nugget of energy that turns despair into joy.

LYRICS PROMPT

TABACCO ROAD
SETTING c7    DRUM 1
I was born in a trunk
Mama died and my daddy got drunk
Left me here to die alone
In the middle of Tobacco Road

Growin' up, rusty shack
All I had was hangin' on my back
Only you know how I loathe
This place called Tobacco Road

But it's home
The only life I've ever known
Only you know how I loathe
Tobacco Road

Gonna leave, get a job
With the help and the grace from above
Save some money, get rich and old
Bring it back to Tobacco Road

Bring that dynamite and a crane
Blow it up, start all over again
Build a town be proud to show
In the name Tobacco Road

But it's home
The only life I've ever known
Only you know how I loathe, huh
Tobacco Road, wow

2  Drinking gasoline by the Baboons

This is just Blues in Em
Use Em7 2nd fret, you know

 THE CONCEPT

The songs are   in a parade of rising keys. E major key is higher than a minor so Drinking Gasoline is Em   COMES BEFORE Song #3 in in the Key of E  "Don't look Now" (moved to set 2)Then KEY OF f AND THEN I go to a couple of songs in the key of G that folkies and bluegrass and rockabilly folks can jam. Shut Down is in Ab and love forever more is Am. Then Walk Like a Man is in Bb and now you know what I mean. What sort of effect will this have on the listeners.

 3 HURT YOU FIRST   3 5 7 15 21 28 20 32

You're too good to me
Fill me up when my glass looks empty
You always try to see
A better version of me
I'm never waiting
Cause I know that you'll always make it
And I can't take it
You're just too calculated

[Pre-Chorus]
It's you or me who breaks it all
I can barely face it
It's you or me who takes the fall
And I can barely take it

[Chorus]
So I'm gonna hurt
I'm gonna hurt you first
I'm gonna hurt
I'm gonna hurt you first
I'll be the one to make you cry
I'll be the one who gets to decide
Oh I'm gonna hurt you first

[Verse 2]
Are you guilty?
Is there a secret that you're hiding?
My prince charming
Yeah it's all a case of timing
Can you blame me?
For protecting myself baby
You're too perfect
Too perfectly orchestrated

[Pre-Chorus]
It's you or me who breaks it all
I can barely face it
It's you or me who takes the fall
And I can barely take it

[Chorus]
So I'm gonna hurt
I'm gonna hurt you first
I'm gonna hurt
I'm gonna hurt you first
I'll be the one to make you cry
I'll be the one who gets to decide
Oh I'm gonna hurt you first

[Verse 3]
Gonna make you cry
Gonna say goodbye
I'm gonna say good...
Gonna make you cry
Uhhh IT WOULD BE NICE
Try to say goodbye
Gonna hurt you first
I'm gonna hurt you first
I'm gonna hurt you first
I'm gonna make you cry
I'll be the one to make you cry
I'll be the one who gets to decide
Oh I'm gonna hurt you first

Uh uh
I'm gonna hurt
I'm gonna hurt
I'm gonna hurt you first
Oh I'm gonna hurt you first

You'll be the one
You'll be the one
Yeah you'll be the only one that is crying
So I'm gonna hurt you first

4  ROCKABILLY HALL OF FAME
B side band?
Setting A 6 or D6
This song is a quick change blues. Starts in F and goes to Bb and the beauty of this song is it going to Bbm before it goes back to F. I make the Bbm sound like two chords by playing it low first and pling the higher notes before going back to F. In the chorus
I accidently discovered a rockabilly trick. Where it goes "sweet Gene Vincent) I play the Bb on the first fret and lift off the A open to Bb and same going to the F
So its like F Bb Bbm F C7 and the chorus is Bb to F Bb to F and then C7
We found ourselves this cool address
In Nashville….Tennesee no less that night at the RHOF
Won't believe the folks we saw the moment we walked through that door that night ……at the RHOF

5    Johnny are you gay?
I mean are you like, serious, I mean, doin' stuff?
Uh-uh.
Has he ever tried?
Uh-uh.
What's his problem!?
Johnny, are you gay?
You're so good looking
But something's in the way
When I look in your eyes
Oh, Johnny you mean so much to me
I've waited so long for you to set me free
And so I ask myself each day
Johnny, are you gay?
You've got a real cool shirt, yeah
It's tight black satin
Not like the other guys, now
They all wear plaid and corduroy
I really like your style
i wanna be your boy
So I ask myself each day,
Johnny, are you gay?
(B)Shopping malls and station wagons
(G)Ain't a lot for a girl like me
(B)My ma was a naggy parent,
(G)So Johnny, won't you set me free
(A)Take a look into my eyes, there's lots of love for you
Tell me now, is it wrong
To want to get more from you?
Johnny, are you gay?
I didn't see you at the ballgame
I heard you gone shopping
Just you and Jasper Morgan
All I want is to be close to you
C'mon, give it a try, I know you'll like it too
And so I ask myself each day...
SOLO SOLO SOLO  SOLO
SHOPPING MALLS AND STATION WAGONS

Johnny, are you gay?
I saw you dancin' techno
The way you move to the beat
It just ain't natural
Oh, Johnny, you mean so much to me
I've waited so long for you to set me free
And so I ask myself each day,
Johnny, are you gay?
6    TOMBSTONE SHADOW, DRUMS 24
TOMBSTONE SHADOW  stretchin' across my path.
Tombstone shadow, stretchin' across my path.
Ev'ry time I get some good news, ooh,
There's a shadow on my back.
Saw the gypsy man, 'way down in san berdoo.
Said, I saw the gypsy man, 'way down in san berdoo.
Five dollars on the table, ooh,
Keep me 'way from my tomb.
Oh! oh!
Said I got thirteen months of bad luck,
Bound to be some pain.
Don't you do no trav'lin',
Fly in no machines.
Tombstone shadow, stretchin' across my path.
Every time I get some good news, ooh,
There's a shadow on my back.
The man gave me a luck charm, cost five dollars more,
Said, "put some on your pillow, and put some on your door."
He said, "take a long vacation, ooh,
For thirteen months or more."
Oh, lord!
Tombstone shadow, stretchin' across my path.
Tombstone shadow, stretchin' across my path.
Every time I get some good news, ooh,
There's a shadow on my back.
Oh, oh, lord!
Oh, lord!

8  Shut Down  Ab
By The Beach Boys
Tach it up, tach it up
Buddy gonna shut you down
It happened on the strip where the road is wide
(Oooo rev it up now)
Declinin' numbers at an even rate
At the count of one we both accelerate

and the four-thirteen's really diggin' in

Gotta be cool now power shift here we go
Superstock Dodge
is windin' out in low
But my fuel injected Stingray's really startin' to go
To get the traction I'm ridin' the clutch
My pressure plate's burnin

Pedal's to the floor hear the dual quads rake
(Oooo pump it up now)
And now the four-thirteen's lead is startin' to shrink

13  HILLBILLY HIGHWAY
Don’t forget break at 2:40 and the other two

My granddaddy was a miner, but he finally saw the light
He didn't got much, just a beat-up truck and a dream about a better life
Grand mama cried when she waved goodbye, never heard such a lonesome sound
Pretty soon the dirt road turned into blacktop, Detroit City bound
Down that hillbilly highway
On that hillbilly highway
That old hillbilly highway
Goes on and on
Now he worked and saved his money so that one day he might send
My old man off to college, to use his brains and not his hands
Grand mama cried when she waved goodbye, never heard such a lonesome sound
But daddy had himself a good job in Houston, one more rollin' down
that old hillbilly highway
That old hillbilly highway
That old hillbilly highway
Goes on and on
On and on, on and on
Here it goes
Granddaddy rolled over in his grave the day that I quit school
I just sat around the house playin' my guitar, Daddy said I was a fool
My mama cried when I said goodbye, I never heard such a lonesome sound
Now I'm standin' on this highway and if you're going my way
You know where I'm bound
Bound that hillbilly highway
On that hillbilly highway
That old hillbilly highway
Goes on and on
Hmm, yeah that's the road I'm on it
Hillbilly highway
Hillbilly highway
With all these Confederate flags I reckon it's about time for me to get a Union Cap.

The Working Man Lyrics

Creedence Clearwater Revival - lyrics Complete Studio Albums Other Album Songs

  • Well, I was born on a Sunday; on Thursday I had me a job. I was born on a Sunday; by Thursday I was workin' out on the job. I ain't never had no day off since I learned right from wrong.
Mama said I was bad, I did something to her head. Mama said I was bad, I did something to her head. And poppa threw me out, ooh, said, "I gotta earn my own way."
Pattern and solo verse
[Chorus:] I ain't never been in trouble; I ain't got the time.
I don't mess around with magic, child. What I got is mine.
Whatever you say, Lord, well, that's what I'm gonna do. Whatever you say, well, that's what I'm gonna do. 'Cause I'm the working man, Lord, and I do the job for you.
pattern and solo verse
[Chorus]
Every Friday, well, that's when I get paid. Don't take me on Friday, Lord, 'cause that's when I get paid. Let me die on Saturday night, ooh, before Sunday gets my head.

17  ACE OF SPADES

If you like to gamble, I tell you I'm you're man, You win some, lose some it's all the same to me, The pleasure is to play, it makes no difference what you say, I don't share your greed, the only card I need is, The Ace Of Spades.1
Playing for the high one, dancing with the devil, Going with the flow, it's all the same to me, Seven or eleven, snake eyes watching you, Double up or quit, double take or split, The Ace Of Spades.
You know I'm born to lose, and gambling's for fools, But that's the way I like it baby, I don't want to live forever, And don't forget the joker!
Pushing up the ante, I know you want to see me, Read 'em and weep, the dead man's hand again, I see it in your eyes, take one look and die, The only thing you see, you know it's gonna be, The Ace Of Spades.

Who will take the coal from the mine? Who will take the salt from the earth?
Who'll take a leaf and grow it to a tree?
Don't look now, it ain't you or me.

Who will put his back to the plough

I threw a wish in the well, Don't ask me, I'll never tell
I looked to you as it fell, and now you're in my way

I wasn't looking for this, but now you're in my way

Hot night, the wind was blowin' Where you think you're going, baby

Oh no, what do we do
Don't look down but I lost my shoe

What's the matter babe I'm feelin' sick
Whats a matter, whats a matter, whats a matter, You

written and performed by Carole King
from "Tapestry", 1971
transcribed by Peter Eybert

E B7 E B7
My life has been a tapestry of rich and royal hue,
   E B7 E B7
an everlasting vision of the everchanging view,
  F#m7 B A B
a wondrous woven magic in bits of blue and gold,
  Amaj7 G#m7 F#m B7
a tapestry to feel and see, impossible to hold.

Emaj7 B9 Emaj7 B9
Once amid the soft silver sadness in the sky
      E B9 E B7
there came a man of fortune, a drifter passing by
   F#m7 B A B
he wore a torn and tattered cloth around his leathered hide
      Amaj7 G#m7 F#m B7 F#m7 B7
and a coat of many colors, yellow-green on either side.

   G D7sus D7 Gmaj7 D7
He moved with some uncertainty, as if he didn't know
G D7sus D7 Gmaj7 D7
just what he was there for, or where he ought to go
B Gb7 Abm7 B
once he reached for something golden hanging from a tree
        Emaj7 Gb
and his hand came down - empty.

E B7 E B7
Soon within my tapestry along the rutted road
   E B7 E B7
he sat down on a river rock and turned into a toad,
   F#m7 B A B
it seemed that he had fallen into someone's wicked spell,
      Amaj7 G#m7 F#m B7
and I wept to see him suffer, though I didn't know him well.

F C7 F C7
As I watched in sorrow, there suddenly appeared
  F C7 F C7
a figure gray and ghostly beneath a flowing beard
   Gm7 C Bb C
in times of deepest darkness, I've seen him dressed in black
       Bbmaj7 Am7 Gm C7
now my tapestry's unraveling; he's come to take me back,

he's come to take me back.

7 shut down  beach boys

Tach it up, tach it up
Buddy gonna shut you down
It happened on the strip where the road is wide

Two cool sharks standin' side by side

Yeah, my fuel injected Stingray and a four-thirteen

Revvin' up our engines and it sounds real mean

Tach it up, tach it up, tach it up
Buddy gonna shut you down
Declinin' numbers at an even rate

At the count of one we both accelerate

My Stingray is light the slicks are startin' to spin

But the four-thirteen's really diggin' in

Gotta be cool now power shift here we go
Superstock Dodge is windin' out in low
But my fuel injected Stingray's really startin' to go
To get the traction I'm ridin' the clutch
My pressure plate's burnin' it shimmies too much
Pedal's to the floo
r hear the dual quads rake
the four-thirteen's lead is startin' to shrink
He's hot with ram induction but it's understood
I got a fuel injected engine sittin' under my hood
